Most big home repairs start as small problems that nobody noticed. A seasonal routine catches them early.
Spring
- Clean gutters and check that downspouts drain away from the house.
- Look over the roof for missing or damaged shingles.
- Service the air conditioner before the heat arrives.
- Check outdoor faucets and hoses for leaks.
Summer
- Inspect decks and fences, and reseal wood if needed.
- Clean the dryer vent, a common fire hazard.
- Trim trees and shrubs away from the house.
Fall
- Clean gutters again after the leaves drop.
- Service the furnace and replace the filter.
- Seal gaps around windows and doors.
- Drain and shut off outdoor faucets in cold climates.
Winter
- Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
- Watch for ice dams and frozen pipes.
- Check the water heater and flush sediment if it's due.
