How to Declutter Your Home in One Weekend

How to Declutter Your Home in One Weekend

A realistic, room-by-room plan to clear the clutter without burning out.

You don't need a month or a minimalist lifestyle to feel lighter at home. One focused weekend can make a big difference.

Before you start

Grab three boxes or bags: keep, donate or sell, and trash or recycle. Put on music, and give yourself permission to be imperfect.

Saturday morning: the entryway and living room

Start where you'll see results every day. Clear surfaces first: coffee tables, shelves, the spot where mail piles up.

Saturday afternoon: the kitchen

  • Toss expired food and spices.
  • Donate duplicate gadgets and mugs you never use.
  • Clear the counters except for things you use daily.

Sunday morning: the bedroom and closet

Ask one question about each item: "Would I buy this again today?" If not, let it go. Donate clothes that don't fit or haven't been worn in a year.

Sunday afternoon: the bathroom, then drop-off

Clear out old products and medicine (many pharmacies take unused medication). Then take the donate pile to the car before you change your mind.

Keep it that way

Try "one in, one out": each time something new comes in, something old goes.

Decluttering when downsizing

If you're thinking about moving to a smaller home, start decluttering months ahead. Go one room at a time, and start with rooms that hold fewer memories, like the garage or linen closet.

What to do with keepsakes

  • Take photos of items you love but don't need to keep.
  • Ask family members which heirlooms they'd truly like, and give them now while you can enjoy their reaction.
  • Keep one small box of your most treasured items.

Get help

Invite grandchildren to help. It's a great way to share stories. Senior move managers can also help with bigger moves.
