The Scams Everyone Should Know About Right Now

Fake delivery texts, family emergency calls, tech support pop-ups and more, with how to shut each one down.

Scams have gotten slicker, and they target everyone, not just the people you'd expect. Knowing the playbook is the best defense.

Fake delivery and toll texts

"Your package is on hold" or "You have an unpaid toll," with a link. The link leads to a fake payment page. Check the carrier's or toll agency's app directly instead.

The family emergency call

A panicked relative, sometimes with a voice cloned by AI, needs bail or hospital money now. Hang up and call them back on a number you know. Agree on a family code word.

Tech support pop-ups

A warning says your computer is infected and gives a number to call. Real companies don't do this. Never give remote access to someone who contacted you first.

Government impersonators

Callers claiming to be from the IRS, Social Security or Medicare, threatening arrest or cut-off benefits. Agencies don't call out of the blue asking for payment.

Job and investment "opportunities"

Easy remote work that requires buying equipment upfront, or a crypto "mentor" with guaranteed returns. If it's guaranteed, it's a scam.

If you've been hit

  • Stop contact and don't send more money.
  • Call your bank right away.
  • Report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

If a scammer got your personal details, keep a close eye on your accounts for the next few months, or set up identity monitoring so you're alerted automatically.

Scams aimed at older adults

The grandparent scam, fake Medicare calls, tech support scams and romance scams are especially common among older adults. They often use pressure and fear.

A simple rule

If someone asks for payment in gift cards, wire transfers or cryptocurrency, it's a scam.
